On 29 December 2018 at 1824 UTC (1324 EST) a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) was detected at 36 44.6N 117 24.1W, in Death Valley National Park, CA. It was activated by stranded hiker. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) received the alert and contacted the Death Valley National Park Service (NPS). After an NPS helicopter was unable to reach the hiker due to heavy winds, AFRCC assistance was requested. The AFRCC launched a helicopter to the location, but was also unable to retrieve the hiker. The next day, after the heavy winds subsided, an NPS helicopter reached the hiker and hoisted him to safety.
