The EPIRB was manually activated when the 36-foot sailing vessel OTHILIA, with 3 people on board, began taking on water. The Sweden Rescue Coordination Center informed Coast Guard Sector San Juan (SANJN) of the distress prior to the beacon activation. SANJN made radio contact with the OTHILIA and requested that the vessel's EPIRB be activated. SANJN made radio contact with AMVER vessel DESERT SPRING to request assistance. The DESERT SPRING diverted to the SARSAT position and rescued the 3 people in distress.
