Image of the Month: The Sun from NuSTAR and SDO

The Sun as seen by NuSTAR and SDONASA’s Near Earth Network helps us learn about the sun’s dramatic temperature differences and activity! The sun’s profound dynamism is showcased in this sizzling, high-energy X-ray image.

Strands of green and blue, captured by NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission, reveal high-energy emissions that come from gases heated to more than 3 million degrees.

Those observations were overlaid on a picture taken from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which captured the presence of lower-temperature material (around 1 million degrees) seen in the red channels.

NuSTAR sends data to the ground using the Near Earth Network.
