On 29 October 2017 at 1915 UTC (1515 EDT) the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) at 33 43.2N 115 59.6W, 2 miles northwest of Cactus City, CA in Joshua Tree National Park. The PLB was activated when a hiker fell and suffered a broken leg. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center received the SARSAT alert and notified the National Park Service, which dispatched a helicopter to the SARSAT position. The aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the hiker up, and transferred him to a local hospital.
